Adhesives for Midsole–Outsole Bonding

In footwear manufacturing, the bonding between the midsole and outsole is a critical process that influences comfort, structural stability, and product durability. Selecting a suitable adhesive ensures strong bonding performance and consistent production results across different manufacturing conditions.

Overview of Midsole–Outsole Bonding Process

The bonding process typically includes:

1. Surface Treatment

Roughening, cleaning, and activating the surfaces of the midsole and outsole to enhance adhesion.

2. Adhesive Application

Choosing the appropriate adhesive: solvent-based PU, water-based PU, or traceless adhesive.

Applying a uniform adhesive layer to ensure full coverage.

3. Drying

Solvent-based PU adhesives require oven drying to evaporate solvents.

Water-based PU adhesives rely on heat or air drying to remove moisture.

Traceless adhesives dry quickly and form a clear adhesive film.

4. Bonding & Pressing

Aligning and bonding the midsole and outsole, then applying pressure to ensure full contact.

5. Curing

Allowing the bonded parts to rest, enabling the adhesive to reach its final bonding strength.

Adhesive Types Used for Midsole–Outsole Bonding

1. Solvent-based PU Adhesive Series

    Characteristics:

        1) Excellent initial bonding performance

        2) Long viscosity retention after leaving the oven

        3) Strong resistance to yellowing and heat

        4) Suitable for various footwear materials such as rubber, PU, and TPR

    Recommended Applications:

Ideal for sports shoes, women’s shoes, and footwear requiring strong bonding and durability.

2. Water-based PU Adhesive Series

    Characteristics:

        1) Available in single- or two-component systems

        2) Environmentally friendly formulation

        3) Excellent yellowing resistance and long open time

        4) Good initial adhesion and low odor

    Recommended Applications:

Suitable for factories adopting eco-friendly processes, as well as export-oriented sports and casual footwear.

3. Traceless Adhesive Series

    Characteristics:

        1) Non-glossy adhesive film with no visible marks

        2) Fast drying and suitable for quick bonding

        3) Ideal for parts requiring a clean appearance

    Recommended Applications:

For outsole bonding, molding, and quick repair processes where an invisible bonding line is required.

Conclusion

Different production needs and material combinations determine the choice of adhesive in midsole–outsole bonding. Choosing the right adhesive improves bonding reliability, reduces rework, enhances production efficiency, and strengthens product competitiveness.

Innovating technology to adhere to the future, building a platform to achieve dreams.
