The Future of Spray Adhesives: Solvent-Free, Bio-Based and Even Washable

Ask veteran workers in furniture factories about the biggest changes to spray adhesives over the past two decades, and they will all say the same thing: fewer fumes and better health protection.

Early spray adhesives relied heavily on organic solvents to dissolve rubber. These solvents enabled fast drying, yet released strong, overpowering odors. Even with masks, workers often felt dizzy and nauseous after a full day’s work.

The industry has since phased out toxic ingredients like benzene and toluene for safer formulas. While fumes are greatly reduced, most products still contain solvents, which inevitably produce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and lingering smells.

So can we make spray adhesives completely solvent-free?

Absolutely. This is now a key development trend. Solvent-free spray adhesives feature a 100% solid reactive system. The liquid adhesive turns solid via chemical reactions once exposed to air or mild heat, with zero substances evaporating into the air. Workshops no longer need powerful ventilation, and finished goods have no unpleasant odors at all.

Many solvent-free versions deliver bonding strength and aging resistance on par with traditional products. Some even perform better in flexibility and resistance to temperature changes. Their main downside is higher raw material costs, though prices are expected to drop as technology matures.

Another promising direction is bio-based spray adhesives. Conventional spray adhesives are made from non-renewable petroleum, whose extraction and processing generate large carbon emissions. Researchers are now developing alternatives using renewable plant resources.

Polymers with adhesive properties can be extracted and processed from soybeans, corn, castor beans and crop stalks. Overseas markets already offer spray adhesives with 30%, 50% or even 70% bio-based content. They give off a faint natural plant scent with no harsh irritation.

The third innovation is washable spray adhesives. Standard dried spray glue is water-insoluble, making it impossible to remove fabric covers from furniture for cleaning. Washable formulas work normally in daily use, yet will emulsify and dissolve when soaked in warm water with special detergent. This lets users separate fabric from foam easily.

In the future, sofa covers can be removed, washed and reattached. People can even update furniture styles by replacing fabric without discarding the foam base — a convenient and eco-friendly solution.

Such cutting-edge products are already showcased at industry exhibitions. Water-based and bio-based spray adhesive samples can be applied even in enclosed spaces thanks to ultra-low odor. Currently, they still have higher costs and slower curing speed, but these issues will be solved over time.

Within a decade, new upholstered furniture may come with absolutely no glue smell. Labels will mark the adhesives as bio-based and recyclable. We will all enjoy healthier, greener living brought by technological progress.

Innovating technology to adhere to the future, building a platform to achieve dreams.
